How to pick a crypto exchange bonus that's actually worth the effort
Welcome bonuses are essentially marketing budget the exchange spends to acquire a customer with high lifetime value. That's why headline numbers keep climbing — Bybit pushed past $30,000, BitMart followed at $14,000, KuCoin at $11,000. The numbers themselves don't tell you whether you'll see a cent of that.
Three filters cut through the noise:
- Match the exchange to your trading style. Bybit's $30k package assumes you'll trade $5k–$50k in futures volume in 14 days. If you're never going to trade leverage, it's worth zero. Coinbase's $10 BTC sign-up bonus is tiny by comparison — but you actually get it for a single $25 purchase.
- Look for unconditional first-tier rewards. Mystery boxes after KYC, learn-and-earn quizzes, app-install credits — they pay out small amounts immediately. Tier-5 of a $30k ladder pays out months later, often never.
- Check the regulatory footprint. A registered US exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, CEX.IO) means real consumer protections. An offshore "globally available" exchange means none. For US users, the FinCEN MSB registry is the source of truth.
Three reward types you'll see on every exchange
1. Sign-up bonuses (welcome packages)
Issued for completing KYC and depositing a minimum amount. The reward is usually in USDT, BTC or the exchange's native token, and almost always tied to a trading-volume requirement. Average payout for completing the easiest tier: $5–$50 across the major platforms in 2026.
2. Referral commissions
A code from an existing user. The new user gets a bonus (one-off); the referrer gets a perpetual or 12-month commission on the new user's trading fees. Top commission rates: Binance up to 41%, Bitget up to 50%, OKX up to 50%, BitMart up to 40%. For the referrer this can become real recurring income; for the new user, it's free money on the first deposit.
3. Mystery boxes & Rewards Hubs
Gamified random payouts. The most consistent in 2026: OKX ships up to $50 in BTC/USDT, KuCoin up to $500 (heavy tail-skew on the smaller end), CEX.IO guarantees a payout in 7 business days after first trade. Bitget mystery boxes commonly land 50–500 USDT.
Editorial test: 30 exchanges, 7 days
In April 2026, our team opened accounts on 30 exchanges, completed KYC and the lowest available bonus tier on each. Average tier-1 payout: $11.40 in withdrawable crypto. Highest tier-1 reward without a deposit requirement: OKX Mystery Box ($32 in BTC). Lowest: BitForex ($2 in voucher credit). Most generous overall after deposit + one trade: CEX.IO (200 USDC across welcome stages).
Regional considerations: where can you actually sign up?
The "global" label most exchanges advertise is misleading. Binance does not serve US residents (Binance.US is a separate, smaller entity). Bybit and OKX restrict US, UK, Ontario and several other jurisdictions. Kraken, Coinbase, Gemini and CEX.IO are the most US-friendly. For EU users, look for exchanges holding a MiCA CASP authorisation.
What we don't list here
This site exclusively covers crypto exchanges, wallets and earn platforms. We don't list crypto casinos, sportsbooks, dice or roulette platforms — even if they offer larger promotional bonuses. Gambling-adjacent "free crypto" comes with risks that fall outside our editorial scope. If a platform's primary product is wagering rather than trading, you won't find it on cryptorewards.promo.

Which exchange gives the biggest real sign-up bonus?
For unconditional payout, Coinbase ($10 in BTC for a $25 deposit + $100 trade) and Kraken ($20+ in BTC per referral) are the cleanest. For maximum theoretical reward, Bybit ($30,000) and Phemex ($30,000) advertise the largest packages, but these require thousands in trading volume to unlock past tier 1. For US users, CEX.IO's 1,000 USDC package is the highest-ceiling fully-regulated bonus.
Can I use multiple referral codes on the same exchange?
No. Every exchange we've tested enforces a one-promo-per-account rule. A welcome code at sign-up locks out other referral programs. You can sometimes stack a sign-up bonus with platform-wide campaigns (Learn & Earn quizzes, app-install vouchers) — but never two referral codes on one account.
Do I lose the bonus if I don't trade?
Usually yes. Most "deposit and trade" bonus packages expire after 7–30 days. If you only deposit and never trade, only the first-tier (deposit) credit is awarded — and even that often requires at least one transaction to convert into withdrawable crypto.
How often are these bonus amounts updated on cryptorewards.promo?
We re-verify every brand page quarterly against the exchange's official promo URL. Material changes (new campaigns, terms tweaks) are pushed monthly. The current verification cycle is May 2026 — every page shows its verified-for-2026 stamp.
