What account abstraction means
Traditional crypto wallets are "externally owned accounts" (EOAs) — a private key signs transactions. Smart-contract wallets like Argent put the wallet logic into a smart contract. This unlocks features impossible on EOAs: gasless transactions (the wallet pays gas in tokens instead of ETH), social recovery (designated guardians can help you regain access), session keys (pre-authorise specific actions without re-signing each time), and batch transactions.
Argent has been one of the most aggressive proponents of account abstraction since 2018. Their Argent X wallet for Starknet is the de-facto wallet for the Starknet ecosystem.
Argent + Starknet airdrops
The Starknet (STRK) airdrop in February 2024 distributed tokens to active Starknet users, weighted by Argent X usage among other factors. Future Starknet ecosystem airdrops (potentially: Ekubo, Nostra, Avnu, Ethena's Starknet expansion) follow similar patterns. Users actively using Argent X in 2026 are accumulating eligibility.
Reward channels
- STRK quests — periodic campaigns rewarding specific on-chain actions in the Starknet ecosystem.
- Argent App rewards — DeFi yield on stablecoins and ETH via integrated providers.
- Referral programme — modest USDC referral bonuses for inviting friends to the Argent X Starknet wallet.
When to choose Argent
For Starknet users: Argent is the obvious default. For Ethereum L1 users: Argent's classic Ethereum wallet is still excellent for the account abstraction features, but the dApp ecosystem is more limited than MetaMask. For multi-chain users without a Starknet focus: MetaMask or Rabby is usually a better fit.
Frequently asked questions about Argent
Is Argent really seedless?
Yes — Argent uses social recovery instead of a seed phrase. You designate 2-3 guardians (trusted contacts or hardware wallets). If you lose access, the guardians can collectively help you recover. No 12-word phrase to lose.
How do gasless transactions work on Argent?
Argent X (Starknet) allows you to pay gas in USDC or other tokens instead of ETH. Starknet's account abstraction natively supports this through paymasters.
Are guardians risky?
Guardians cannot move your funds — they can only help you recover access if you lose it. A standard setup uses 1-of-3 guardian configuration with at least one being a hardware wallet you control.
Can I use Argent for Ethereum L1?
Yes — Argent's classic Ethereum wallet predates the Starknet expansion. Both products are maintained.
