Edge's positioning
Edge launched in 2014 as Airbitz and rebranded in 2018. The wallet's distinguishing technical feature is its client-side encryption model: instead of a raw seed phrase, you create a username + password combination that derives a wallet key on your device. This means recovery can happen via username + password from any device — closer to the UX of a traditional account than a typical crypto wallet.
The trade-off: if you forget both the username and the password, recovery is more difficult than from a printed seed phrase. Edge mitigates with optional recovery questions and biometric backup.
How Edge rewards work
Edge integrates Bitrefill (the leading crypto-to-gift-card service) directly in-app. Purchases of Amazon, Walmart, Target and similar gift cards at 1–5% discount versus face value are common. The discount comes from Bitrefill's bulk rates passed back to users.
Edge also runs periodic buy/sell promos through its in-app exchange (powered by partners like Banxa and Sideshift). New users sometimes get a $5–$15 promotional bonus on first fiat-on-ramp purchase.
Edge vs MetaMask vs Trust Wallet
Edge is the most privacy-focused of the three — no analytics, no email collection, client-side encryption. The trade-off: smaller dApp browser, no native DeFi integration, fewer supported chains. For users who prioritise privacy and want a simple buy/sell/spend wallet without DeFi exposure, Edge is the best fit. For DeFi power users, MetaMask remains the default.
Frequently asked questions about Edge Wallet
How does Edge's username + password recovery actually work?
Your password derives a key on your device that encrypts the wallet seed. The encrypted blob is stored on Edge's servers (only the encrypted version — Edge can't decrypt it without your password). On a new device, sign in with username + password, the blob is downloaded, and your device decrypts it locally.
Is Edge truly non-custodial?
Yes — Edge cannot move funds from your wallet. The keys are encrypted client-side; the server only sees the encrypted blob. Edge's architecture is sometimes mistaken for custodial because of the username/password UX, but it isn't.
What gift card brands does Edge support?
Via Bitrefill integration: Amazon, Walmart, Target, Apple, Steam, Best Buy, Uber, Airbnb and 4,000+ other brands across 100+ countries.
